Booby Baby!

Did you know that this is World Breastfeeding Week and August is National Breastfeeding Awareness Month? Well if you didn’t, now you do!

The whole tribe has breast fed for varying lengths of time and have all been weaned for different reasons. Emma ate non-stop. Literally. We struggled for almost 3 months with lots of blood, sweat and tears (ok not blood that came with Taylor). The day I put her on formula I felt like an immense burden was lifted off my shoulders.

Taylor took to nursing very easily and kept after it like a champ. He had teeth come in very early. It was quite a surprise to find teeth in his mouth one day when he was only 2 months old. He was even a little gentleman and didn’t use them for a long time. Right around 6 months old someone switched this little cutie out with a blood sucking vampire. I researched ways to teach babies to quit biting, nothing worked. So after a week or so of feeling like I was being mauled by a rabid dog, Taylor became a formula baby.

Henry was slow to take nursing. He had a hard time latching on at first for what ever reason. We muddled thru the first few days and then it clicked. He’s done well. I made my mind up I was going to wean him after Taylor became sick and ended up at the hospital. I had already just came off of solely pumping for a week while Emma was hospitalized. I HATE pumping. I would so much rather feed a cute little baby face than deal with a machine. I held out for 2 days before breaking down and nursing Henry when I came home one night. I was sore, he was cute, I caved. Some will power.

Breast feeding is some hard stuff. It can be confusing, some people aren’t supportive and let’s face it, it makes the ta-ta’s a little tender. I have been a mom who supplemented every kid with formula. One or two bottles a day. I’ve always worried about supply issues, I don’t like to pump and I’m pretty sure formula is not the devil some people make it out to be.

It’s a choice every mother has to make. People start asking how you’re planning on nourishing your little bundle of joy almost as soon as you tell them you’re pregnant. For me it was a no brainer. I am cheap. Breast milk is free, boom I had my answer! Formula has grown many healthy babies over the years, but they don’t give the stuff away.

Breast feeding is time consuming, yes. But hey if I can do it on my 3rd tribe member and still stay sane, so can you if you’re on the fence about it. Talk about an opportunity to spend some cuddle time with your little cherub! I mean it does feel like they’re hooked there the majority of the time.

Every woman chooses to feed their baby the way that works the best for them. Breast feeding has made me angry, anxious, happy, concerned, content and feeling successful. Little Henry has been my biggest success story at 8 months. I’m glad I didn’t wean him, I mean who can say no to that face!
